About Juneteenth
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally received word of their emancipation more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863. It is recognized as a day of celebration, remembrance, and ongoing commitment to racial justice. Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
