Dear Friends in Christ,
This morning, a Portland police officer shot and killed a man in the Southeast neighborhood of Portland. This event comes after a series of several violent acts happening around our country: the killing of 8 individuals at a FedEx warehouse in Indianapolis, the killing of Daunte Wright in Minnesota, and the killing of 13-year-old Adam Toledo in Chicago, to name a few. All of which occur during an already heightened time in our country due to the public trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin for the killing of George Floyd.
These acts of violence break us open at the core of our humanity: the precious life we are given and its imminent fragility. There is a larger systemic problem facing our country and our community: the institutional reliance on violence, as seen in the excessive use of weapons, particularly firearms, in both our police force and by individuals seeking to do harm. Violence is not the path to peace, empowering our community is. Investing in people over power will lead us to unity.
As investigations unfold of this event, I ask your prayers for our country, the community of Portland, and for the repose of the soul of the victim.

Esta mañana, un oficial de policía de Portland disparó y mató a un hombre en el vecindario del sureste de Portland. Este hecho sucede después de una serie de varios actos violentos ocurridos en todo nuestro país: el asesinato de 8 personas en un almacén de FedEx en Indianápolis, el asesinato de Daunte Wright en Minnesota y el asesinato de Adam Toledo de 13 años en Chicago, solamente para nombrar algunos. Y todo esto está ocurriendo en un momento crítico de nuestro país debido al juicio público del ex policía Derek Chauvin por el asesinato de George Floyd.
Estos actos de violencia llegan y hieren hasta el corazón de nuestra humanidad: la vida preciosa que se nos da y su inminente fragilidad. Nuestro país y nuestra comunidad está enfrentando un problema sistémico existente: la dependencia institucional de la violencia en el uso excesivo de las armas, como podemos ver, particularmente armas de fuego, tanto en nuestra fuerza policial como por parte de personas que buscan hacer daño. La violencia no es el camino hacia la paz, la fuerza que tiene nuestra comunidad sí lo es. Preocuparse de las personas por encima del poder nos llevará a la unidad.
Mientras que continúan las investigaciones de este hecho, les pido sus oraciones por nuestro país, por la comunidad de Portland y por el descanso eterno del alma de la víctima.
