Dear clergy, wardens and lay leaders,
It is time for you to take a break. It is time to stop and step back for a spell.
After much listening, and reflecting on my conversations with you, it is abundantly clear that you have been working “full-tilt-boogie” for a year now. It is not healthy to continue like this. It is not life-giving for you and, ultimately, for your congregations to continue working like this. So, for the sake of the Diocese and for the building of up Christ’s body, I am asking you to take a break from your work.
For the week following Easter, April 5 – 11, 2021, I am asking all clergy in charge of congregations, wardens, and lay leaders to take a break. In order to do this, you will need to stop working. I know that the practice of going “slow and low” in the week following Easter is common. But this year I am urging you to stop your work and do something restorative. If this means closing the church office during that week, please do so. Beyond the pastoral emergencies needing your presence, please find a way to take a break.
Anyone who leads a congregation knows it’s not really a break if you have the next Sunday sermon to write. I encourage you to be creative in making arrangements for this needed break. Perhaps you have lay leaders who can lead Morning Prayer and read a meditation or reflection on the scripture. Another option might be to offer Morning Prayer without a sermon and, instead, leave a time of silence following the Gospel reading. If you feel a sermon is needed, it will be important that you find a way to have someone else preach on Sunday, April 11.
I have spoken with the Rev. John Scannell about the availability of retired clergy to step-in to help. He has consulted with them and has provided the following list of clergy who are willing to “spell” a priest arranging a break that Sunday. In addition, I will make available a recorded sermon for Sunday, April 11 that can be used for services that will be meeting virtually.
The Episcopal Diocese of Oregon has incredibly gifted and innovative priests and lay leaders, I have full confidence that we can find creative solutions that will ensure a true break from the demands of serving during this pandemic. Reach out to your congregations for ideas and help. Reach out to one another. Reach out to your retired clergy colleagues. Reach out to me, your Bishop.

Es tiempo de que Uds. tomen un descanso. Es tiempo para que paren y se detengan por un rato.
Después de escuchar y de reflexionar mucho sobre mis conversaciones con ustedes, está muy claro que han estado trabajando “a toda máquina” durante un año. No es saludable seguir así. No es vivificante para ustedes seguir trabajando así, y en última instancia, para sus congregaciones. Entonces, por el bien de la Diócesis y para la edificación del cuerpo de Cristo, les pido que tomen un tiempo de descanso de su trabajo.
La semana siguiente a la Pascua, del 5 al 11 de abril de 2021, les pido a todos los clérigos, los mayordomos y los líderes laicos, a cargo de las congregaciones, que tomen un descanso. Para hacer esto, deberán dejar de trabajar. Sé que la práctica de “llevársela con calma” la semana siguiente a la Pascua es común.
