Join us for a Summer Beginning Iconography Retreat in which you will prayerfully transform a blank gessoed icon board to an icon of the Holy Face of Christ (Mandylion) painted in the ancient technique of egg tempera. Learn about the icon’s history, how to make egg emulsion and how to mix your own pigments, various methods of applying pigment in the egg tempera medium, brush and line techniques, and gilding – offered in a quiet, contemplative environment conducive to meditative prayer.
You will be learning one of the world’s most ancient techniques of painting. Our historic pigments are made from natural earth and ground minerals sourced from Zecchi’s Colori Belle Arti in Florence, Italy, the location of a pigment purveyor since the 1300s. Zecchi’s supplies the Uffizi with the very same pigments we provide you, to conserve the world’s masterpieces.
You will learn this sacred art in the historic, peaceful hilltop monastery of Mt. Angel Abbey in St. Benedict, Oregon far away from distraction and daily concerns. This contemplative environment offers quietude and peace necessary to support the liturgical art of iconography. Additionally, students have the option to pray the liturgy of the hours with the monks.
Students in both Beginning & Intermediate/Advanced, will have meals together and evenings to work and socialize.
Lodging at the abbey guesthouse is sold out, but the Oregon Garden Resort and The Silverton Inn & Suites offer air conditioned accommodations nearby. Select "Option B" to register for classes and meals.
