Experience a pilgrimage to the early foundations of sacred art in North Macedonia & Serbia to witness the foundations of early Christian art in monasteries, churches, and historic sites.
This tour is co-lead with an Orthodox priest who has decades of experience leading pilgrimage tours to historic and scenic holy sites worldwide and his connections in this part of the world are well-established. We'll have admission to locations that the average person could never access, making this a truly once in a lifetime experience. One returning student is joining us a second time because the first trip was “life changing.”
We will see sacred art in frescos, mosaics and icons of the 11th to 16th centuries created by Byzantine artists who were sent from Constantinople to North Macedonia and Serbia to create the visual gospel for newly Christianized populations.
You will visit churches, monasteries, monastic caves and UNESCO world heritage sites guided with local, English-speaking experts in history, art and religion. Iconographers will explain the meaning of the works to help you understand what you see.
This fully guided and planned tour begins September 18 to October 1, 2023 and includes most meals, lodging and transportation. Our objective is to offer a transformative experience, taking individuals to transcendentals that will truly touch the heart.
